Introducing the

  .
To be judged and awarded at the
First National Bonsai Exhibition
October 11-12, 2008, Rochester, New York

First prize: $1000
Second prize: $300
Third prize: $200

I am immensely pleased to have the opportunity to announce the Ho Yoku Award. Its purpose is to stimulate a more creative, independent approach to the art and presentation of bonsai, and to encourage western artists to take another step towards claiming the art of bonsai as their own.

The guidelines are simple: to create a formal display (one that achieves the aesthetic goals of the traditional Japanese display) using an original concept and incorporating western elements.

Registration to compete for this award is not necessary: all displays in the exhibition will be judged unless the exhibitor specifically requests for a display to be excluded from judging.

No more rules, just a blank canvas....

I look forward to seeing your entry to the First National Bonsai Exhibition and the Hô Yoku Award.

In our upcoming projects, we want to bring communities closer with their members as well as with other groups. We want each individual to have a soapbox to stand on when they have something to share. We want to provide resources to societies, groups and organizations that will allow them to do what they do best instead of spending too much time doing administrative tasks.

As we introduce new functionality into the website and develop projects for you, we hope that you will continue to provide feedback and thoughts lettings us know what we did right (and even what we did wrong). There is a link available in the menu that you can use to privately share your thoughts as well as a public forum set aside for discussion that our staff will participate in regularly. And further, we encourage you to participate in discussions, activities and workshops as we introduce them.

Another feature we've made available is the option to provide your own announcements and news in our Submit News section. After you submit your article, it will be reviewed by a moderator and added to the site (with credit to you). If you have pictures to include in your article, contact us and we will make arrangements for you. To prevent abuse of this system, you MUST be a registered member of the site and logged in before the link will be visible in the menu.

Last, but not least, I need to mention one little disclaimer. BonsaiTree.com is a work in progress. Some items may be broken, especially as new items are introduced. While we try to make sure everything is delivered with as few problems as possible, there is no such thing as technology that works as it should. Because of this, I need our readers and members to help tell us what needs fixing. I'm planning on putting in some reward system for reported problems on the site (feel free to provide suggestions). While I'm working this out, feel free to use whatever means available to point these problems out...I'll be keeping a tally running to apply to the reward system once it's in place.

With all of that said, please enjoy the community! Don't forget to tell everyone!

Cheers!
- Mike
