Hi Ziggy,
Ficus is one of the toughest plants around, I have seen Nurseries PRODUCE bonsai and glue gravel so that shipping will be easier, they are not concerned about the health of the plant.
This is a good time of the year to repot your ficus and eliminate the glued gravel, use a good potting soil (Miracle produces a good clean soil) you can add 20-30 percent course gravel mix. The gravel is optional, I seldom use BONSAI MIXES per say. They dry out too fast for my Bonsai's needs.
Incidently, some of the nicest Bonsai in the world today, is the Azalia.
The best time to repot/collect Azalia is early spring.
