VictorCuevas User Karma: 1	browning? 2006/08/30 21:19 Hello, I just got my first Bonsai yesterday! It came with some browning on it. What can I do, do I shear? See picture attached. Thanks to anyone who can help. I love Bonsai :)

bonmore User Karma: 7	Re:browning? 2006/09/02 15:35 Hello Victor, Viewing your Juniper bonsai and it seems to be browning close to the main branches if this is correct I am diagnosing your problem as spider Mite. Mix a level teaspoon of dish detergent (like Lux Liquid) with 6 to 10 oz's of water and spray it on your Bonsai. Get the bonsai to look like a huge soap sud allow to soak for 30-45 mins. then wash the soap off, it will not hurt the roots if the rinse soak through the soil. Spider mites are real tiny and the oil in the soap will kill them repeat this exercise every two weeks at least 3 more times. This is a user friendly method of bug controll and will also kill Mealy bug, scale, aphids, bees and wasps and I am sure many other hard to see insects.

bonmore User Karma: 7	Re:browning? 2006/09/04 00:14 You are welcome Victor. Where are you located? Junipers are outdoor plants and do not grow well indoors. There are other Tropical plants (Bonsai) that are able to tolerate an indoor location much better than the Juniper.

Any recomendations for winters that reach below zero and summers that rise to 110. NYC is so crazy and dramaic with temperatures, maybe I should have gotten a differnt Bonsai. Thanks again, -Victor

bonmore User Karma: 7	Re:browning? 2006/09/04 20:52 Hi Victor, I used to live in Albany, moved south in 1975. Couldent get used to the cold weather. A grow light will help to grow your bonsai indoors. Suspend the light 18" above your bonsai, it should be on for at least 10 hrs. per day. Water twice a week and fertilize with 20-20-20 every 6-8 weeks. If you can find "Superthrive" a vitamin/mineral additive, added to the water, it will help maintain a healthy plant.

VictorCuevas User Karma: 1	Re:browning? 2006/09/05 00:37 Hey, Thanks for all of the advice. I sprayed the dish washing liquid mix and there seems to be some minor improvement already. It has tons of new green foliage. Do you think that it can make a full recovery? I hope so, some of the branches don't look so good, but 80% of it looks great. Will those branches ever green again? Should I shear them? Heh, I am so nervous i guess. Thanks again, -Victor
