Please help.
2006/05/03 19:47 One of my friends recently purchased a 7 year old bonsai off of amazon with a gift card. when its health began to decline, turning yellow on the side facing the sun, he gave it to me in hopes that i could help. Ive done what i can for it so far, it looks healthy at the base, and is draining properly. I live in a humid/temperate/hot climate in texas, so this may impact the behavior of the plant. I water it once every two days, or when it the soil is dry on the surface (technically below the gravel on the top).

My question is this: what is wrong? My father is the associate dept. head of the texas ag. extention service, and is very knowledgable in plant diseases, funguses and pests, and says that this plant shows no sign of anything he knows of. I am thinking it may be needed to be moved outside, but i was just wondering if i should in the summer (june-sept). it gets up past 100 in my part of town. Any help is appreciated

Stats:

Age: 7.5 years
Height: approx 5 inches from the top of the soil
Type: Juniper Procumbens "nana" (i think)
Potted: Medium pot. approx 3or4 X 5or6 inches. soil covered with a gravel, and one stone resting on top.
Position: Indoors next to window with blinds down but partially open to allow for bright but indirect sunlight
Visible problem: Turning yellow on the side and tips on top facing the sunlight. The underside is still a relatively healthy green and side not facing the sun is still getting some growth

please help

Re:Please help.
2006/05/17 15:48 Hello John,

Juniperus Procumbens nana is an outdoor plant, I am growing them in South Florida in the full sun, our weather is similar. First I would like you to spray for Spider Mite - the plant could be infected. Fill a spray bottle with water and add a level teaspoon of Dish washing detergent -

I normally use Palmolive dishwasher detergent.

Spray this solution onto your plant from all directions, you can turn your plant into a large soapsud. Allow it to remain this way for a 1/2 hour and then rinse the soap off the plant, it will not hurt if the soapy water washes through the root system.

Because the plant is indoors you should place it in a semi-shaded area outdoors (the foliage will burn if placed in full sun) and water/drench it well every morning - till you see the water pouring out the bottom drainage holes.

If the gravel is glued in place you should remove the hard glued surface to allow good water flow.

Do not fertilize for at least 2-3 weeks, then after a good watering you can fertilize with a 20-20-20 solution that should be repeated every 4 weeks. if you can - it will not hurt to alternate with Fish Emulsion every other month.

Have a great day and please keep me update with your progress.
