Re:New to the Bonsai "way"
2005/09/18 22:16 Hey dude, well it all kinda depends on what kind of plant u have, different plants like different amounts of water at different times, like Fukien teas should be watered every day or during summer and usually every other day during cooler times here in Florida, or bald cypresses can be put in a bucket of water lower than the rim of the pot and will not rot.

2005/09/19 18:55 What Mr. Puppets has said here is quite true. ;) You have the ability to post a picture on the forums for just this situation. If you happen to have a digital picture, feel free to post it here and we can identify it as well as give you all the help you need in growing it.

Re:New to the Bonsai "way
2005/09/25 21:15 Another factor is where you live because of each locations weather conditions. But my suggestion is water it every day and if it dries out just give it some more water. I suggest not soaking the plants like that, I suggest just watering it with a watering can and letting it drain. Most trees don't like the soil too damp especially Fukien Teas.

Does the tree you own have small needles because then it is probably a Juniperus procumbens 'nana' and likes to be dry sometimes also it likes full sunlight.

If the tree has darker green leaves like this

And has little white flowers and red berries then it is a fukien tea. Keep the soil moist but not soaking. Give it sun and don't let it go outside during extremly cold weather.

If non of these choices are your tree then send a picture and some one will be able to identify it.

2005/09/26 18:47 ok my camra is not working for me to get a picture up.. but it has more of a thin point to the closely bunched leaves... it makes me think of a tiny pine tree.... but the pines are nothing compared to a full sized tree.... the sign said it was three years old and it stands only 4-5 inches tall..... thanks everyone

Re:New to the Bonsai "way
2005/09/26 18:59 Sounds like a Juniper.

Does it look like this?

If so keep it in full sun and water it occasionally. Also weekly spray it with a solution of water and dish soap (Just enough soap to make it bubbly) to get rid of spider mites because I have known many bonsai that were lost to spider mites.

Good Luck!

Re:New to the Bonsai "way
2005/09/28 01:08 I don't know too much about bonsai, but I've managed to pick up a few things while working with Merv. One of the first things he'll tell you is that Junipers are not really a beginner's bonsai. They can't get too much water or they'll rot, if they don't get enough sun, they rot. And on the other hand, it's not too hard to dry them out.

Not to frighten you or anything, just be prepared for a rough time. ;) Hopefully spider mites won't be a big issue. The soap water won't hurt if you do decide on using that treatment. As far as growing, I'd say it's safe to give it full sun, watering every day or partial sun, watering every other day.

BTW, is the dirt/soil glued into the bottom of the pot?

Re:New to the Bonsai "way
2005/11/09 21:21 It will help if you can let me know the State you live in and which area you are growing your Bonsai. If your Bonsai is a Juniper the best grow area would be outdoors, water every other day feed with 20-20-20 monthly and spray the foliage at least once a month with a soap solution to help prevent Spider Mite infections.

Re:New to the Bonsai "way
2006/03/18 23:45 Hello, I live in the Chicago area and just received a juniper bonsai. I am trying very hard not to kill it. It's beautiful. I can't put it outside its too cold here yet. So it needs to be in direct sun? Can it grow in an office with artificial light? Any help would be appreciated...Thanks

Re:New to the Bonsai "way
2006/04/23 15:59 Your Juniper can survive under bright Flourescent lighting for an extended period however I do suggest that during the warmer months Outside temps above 45 deg.to be located in a semi-shaded area not fullsun only because it will be transfered to indoors by the following Autum/Fall.

Re:New to the Bonsai "way
2006/04/23 23:17 Hello! Thank you for answering my questions. I took my plant home and it receives sun now. The lights were not enough. It has been warmer here so I had it outside also. This is really becoming fun and I am getting into the care of this plant which is more than an art than any other plant I have. Thanks again for your help. Colette

Re:New to the Bonsai "way
2006/04/27 22:26 To help ensure a healthy Juniper. The Topic "Bonsai Changing colour" The Soap treatment is extremely inportant. If you use this method of insect controll every 3 months, it will eliminate SpiderMite, Aphids, Scale and Mealy Bug.
