Hello Gr8dane, Welcome to the wannaknowmore group.
The root system of all plants are a mystery.
Once we learn WHEN to work with each individual variety of plant, we will not lose any more.( The key to a healthy Bonsai)
When the sap drops on the Maple (Late Fall thru early Spring) will be the best time of year to collect them. I work with Elms from early Spring thru early Summer. Have not had a chance to work with Honeylocust, If we can hear it from our readers that would be great--or--seeing that you have many around your house, work with one each month, make notes and share your results.
Dont forget to save 6-8" of the trunk, most varieties will survive this type of treatment
