Ulmus
2006/12/11 11:57 Hi,

I (like many others in this forum) recently bought my first bonsai tree. I'm led to believe it is an Ulmus, not sure which variety. Nor do I know exactly how old it is...?? ('~')

I was told by the store assistant that as it is Winter I should not have to water it more than twice a week. Also that it is okay to keep it indoors. Just over a week after purchase I noticed the leaves wilting slightly and that the surface of the soil was hard and dry (I'm hoping there was still moisture under the surface). My book tells me this is very bad... :(
I watered it yesterday and the soil seemed to drain properly.

I keep my tree indoors, where it is not exposed to too much direct sunlight. I live in North England, UK - so it's pretty cold at the moment and the room isn't too stuffy, but when I first bought it I left it in the living room for a few days - perhaps this caused the soil to dry out.

I also read however that Ulmus trees may shed there leaves for new ones, but I can't tell yet if there are any new shoots yet...

Can anyone tell if my tree is in need of urgent assistance from the attachment?

Thanks!

2006/12/28 21:22 Hello David,
How is your Elm doing? I know that we have communicated on numerous occations about necessary treatment. How about an updated description on the condition of your bonsai. It will be nice to know if we are treating your Elm correctly.

2006/12/29 15:04 Thanks for your concern man!!

Well he's lost a lot of leaves since I first posted my comment, but he's quite stable now I think. I'll be keeping an eye on him, he sits on the windowsill now getting lot's of sunlight! (well sort of, it's very cloudy here at the moment!!)

I named him Lil' Sukebe :)

I'll attach a photo when he starts getting new foliage.

Thanks again,

Sukebe

2007/01/02 22:03 Hello David,
I believe Dan Barton lives in Chelsea, I had the pleasure of meeting him and being able to participate in a Bonsai workshop with him about 12-14 years ago.
Dan's book 'The Bonsai Book' published in Great Britain in 1989 by Ebury Press is a must read book.
He is a Bonsai Master that resides in England. Try to locate him, I am sure that he would be only too happy to be able to help and instruct you on raising Bonsai in England..Happy hunting.
Hope you had a safe and happy New Year.
