Warning to all GA bonsai
2008/06/10 09:56 Warning to all GA bonsai folks: I killed mine! But this time it wasn’t exactly my fault. I watered him at 0900 and came back to water it the next day at the same time and he was dead!!! I kept him on the front porch. This spot only receives direct sun for two hours in the afternoon. The adult trees in the yard were fine, but the little one couldn’t take it!
On the bright side, I refused to give up! I brought him inside, trimmed him down and continued to water him. He started to sprout again yesterday! Who’da thought I could ever revive anything???

2008/06/14 01:54 Hello Ziggy,
You deserve a medal for NotGivingUp.
What variety of plant is your Bonsai? How long is it in your collection? How long did it take to sprout new leaves?
Wow!! I am full of questions that need answers, to help us learn more about growing Bonsai in Ga.
Would you be refering to your little Myrtle :-)
Have a great day,
Merv

Hey,
Now that he has been inside for the last two-three weeks, he has filled in rather well. Aka is that myrtle. I stripped off the old leaves first. (They were completely dried out after only 24 hours!!!) I am guessing it was the heat that killed him. It took him about a week to start regrowing. I just now fertilized him because I was afraid to shock him if I did a bunch of stuff to him all at once. I open the window every day in the afternoon because I feel guilty about him not being outside where he really should be.
And if I didn’t have enough to worry about, my future mother-in-law bought me a real project from Wal-Mart today. It’s a Ficus (Spelling?). I have herd they were fairly hardy plants. The trunk has a good little twist in it, but it has a really ugly shape to the top. I am thinking about tossing it outside and seeing how it fairs in the heat. Oh, get this! The gravel on the top is glued together!!! Isn’t that gonna strangle it??? I donno how I’m gonna get it out though.
Is there a web site you recommend for supplies? I cannot find any gravel I like around here. I think I won’t anytime soon considering that the ficus is as close to ‘bonsai’ as I get here in middle GA.
On another note, we started yanking out the azalea bushes in the yard. Six down, 26 to go. If anyone wants them, you have about two weeks before we hope to have all the darn things at the curb. We found some growing through and around an old windshield wiper. We also found four foot tall oak trees growing within them that we didn’t even know were there! These are some serious plants!
Cyah Later,

Re:Warning to all GA bons
2008/07/05 22:47 Hi Ziggy,
Ficus is one of the toughest plants around, I have seen Nurseries PRODUCE bonsai and glue gravel so that shipping will be easier, they are not concerned about the health of the plant.
This is a good time of the year to repot your ficus and eliminate the glued gravel, use a good potting soil (Miracle produces a good clean soil) you can add 20-30 percent course gravel mix. The gravel is optional, I seldom use BONSAI MIXES per say. They dry out too fast for my Bonsai's needs.
Incidently, some of the nicest Bonsai in the world today, is the Azalia.
The best time to repot/collect Azalia is early spring.
