Bonsai help please
2008/04/27 18:01 I have my new bonsai tree outside. it is about 10degrees out (i live on the west coast of canada). i am finding the small pines are quite sharp and brittle. when i purchased it, it had a much softer and greener look to it.
is it too cold? is this just normal behaviour for outdoor trees in the winter/spring?
thank you for any hints or advice.

Re:Bonsai help please
2008/04/28 16:56 Hi LtotheQ,
If you are not protecting the roots from freezing then the plant is in trouble. When a 'northern variety' tree grows in the ground, the roots are deep and moist enough to protect the plant from dieing. However if the plant is in a pot, that is not protected from the weather, you do not have enough root protection.
If the Pine (I am assuming that it is a Pine.) needles are brown, then it could be too late to save it. However, if you still see green needles take the plant indoors and help it survive with adequate lighting (a location that allows enough light for you to read without having to turn on a light for at least 8 hours a day) and moisture.
Do not Fert, never Fert. a plant that is in poor health.
